The 4Cs of Diamonds

Whether natural or lab-grown, all diamonds are graded using the 4Cs developed by the GIA:

1. Cut

  • Determines how well a diamond reflects light.

  • Grades: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor

  • A well-cut diamond shines brighter regardless of clarity or carat.

2. Color

  • Refers to the absence of color.

  • Scale: D (colorless) to Z (light yellow)

  • The less color, the higher the grade and value.

3. Clarity

  • Indicates the presence of internal or external flaws (inclusions/birthmarks).

  • Scale: Flawless (FL) to Included (I1–I3)

4. Carat

  • Refers to diamond weight, not size.

  • 1 carat = 200 milligrams

  • Price increases exponentially with carat weight.
